Switchboard Policies

Switchboard was designed to balance the interests of all persons and businesses listed in the directory and those who want to find them. As a repository of listing information, we are committed to establishing fair and coherent policies concerning issues such as name sourcing, commercial use of listing information, deleting listings, and so on. This list of policy statements covers these and other issues.

Listing Sources and Accuracy

The listings in Switchboard are licensed from Acxiom Corporation and infoUSA, Inc. The listings are compiled from published white and yellow pages directories and other publicly-available sources. Data updates occur monthly.

Residential Listings

Removing - To remove your listing from the Switchboard White Pages directory, please click this Opt-Out link and fill out the online form. The information provided will only be used to remove your name, address, and phone number from Switchboard Whites Pages listings, it will not be used for marketing purposes. Your removal request will be processed within 1 business day.

Unlisted Numbers - Switchboard listings should not contain any unlisted numbers. If your unlisted number appears and you want to remove it, follow the directions for deleting residential listings, above.

Business Listings

Updating - Write to webmaster@switchboard.com and include the incorrect listing, the correct listing (business name, address, city, state, zip code, phone number, fax number, toll-free number), and the Yellow Pages categories (such as Auto Parts - New) that the business should be listed under.

Adding - Write to webmaster@switchboard.com and include the business name, address, city, state, zip code, phone number, fax number, and toll-free number. Include Yellow Pages categories that the business should be listed under. To see popular categories, go to the Yellow Pages search and click the Choose a Category link next to the "Business Name or Category" field.

Deleting - Send your listing as it appears in our database to webmaster@switchboard.com and enter 'Delete' in the subject field. Deleting a listing takes about a week from the time we receive your request. If you do not have email, ask a friend to send us email, or write to InfoSpace, Attn: Switchboard customer support, 601 108th Ave. N.E., Suite 1200, Bellevue, WA 98004.

Listings Are Not Sold or Distributed

Information entered by users will not be resold or distributed to mail-order list providers or others. We have taken a number of precautions to make programmatic extraction of data from the system very difficult. (It is not possible to search for all residential listings in a given area, because only searches by last name are possible.) Be aware, however, that information you enter and make public is available to Switchboard users as well as to commercial organizations.

Offensive Content

All material, data, text, graphics, pictures, video, messages, listings, advertisements, home pages or other information ("Material"), whether posted publicly or transmitted privately, is the sole responsibility of the person from whom such Material originated. Switchboard generally does not pre-screen, monitor, or edit Material posted by users of interactive services that may be available on or through the site. However, we reserve the unilateral right to establish and modify criteria for what constitutes offensive Material on the site and to remove such offensive Material.

Switchboard may preserve and disclose Material if required to do so by law, or take any other action it deems appropriate, in its sole discretion, in the good faith belief that such action is reasonably required to: (a) comply with legal process; (b) respond to claims that Material violates the rights of third-parties; or (c) protect the rights, property, or personal safety of Switchboard, Switchboard users and/or the public.

If you find offensive listings, advertisements, home pages or other offensive Material in Switchboard, please advise us by sending email to webmaster@switchboard.com

Cookies

Switchboard may set and access Switchboard cookies on your computer. A cookie is a small data file that a Web site may send to your browser and which may then be stored on your system. We use persistent cookies and may use session cookies from time to time. For the session cookie, once you close the browser, the cookie simply terminates. A persistent cookie is a small text file stored on your hard drive for an extended period of time. Persistent cookies can be removed by following Internet browser help file directions.

We use cookie technology to track which pages on the Switchboard site our visitors view and which Web browsers our visitors use. We may also use cookies to help you perform searches on the Switchboard site more efficiently and more effectively. This may include the storing of your previous search terms in cookies. We also use "action tags" to assist in delivering the cookie. These action tags allow us to compile statistics and other data about our customers on an aggregate basis, by embedding a random identifying number on each user's browser. Then we track where that number shows up on our site.

Web beacons (also known as "invisible GIFs", "single pixel tags", "action tags," or "web bugs") may be used to assist in delivering cookies on our site and managing related information. A web beacon is a transparent graphic image (usually 1 pixel x 1 pixel) that is placed on our site. When your browser requests information from a Switchboard website, web beacons assist us in gathering information such as: the IP address of your computer; time the material was viewed; the type of browser that retrieved the image; identifying certain actions a user performs while viewing our site content; and the existence of cookies previously set by our servers. We use this technology to access your information in accordance with the other sections of this privacy policy, and to compile aggregate data. [Additionally, third party advertisers and research services may share aggregated and anonymous site statistics with Switchboard regarding the web traffic patterns of web browsers that visit certain Switchboard sites, whether through the use of web beacons or otherwise.] If you are concerned about these practices, you may opt out from receiving cookies in your browser.

Our partners or advertisers may use third parties to serve or present the ads that appear on our site. These third parties may place cookies on your browser when you visit our site. Any third party cookies are subject to the privacy policy of the company placing them. Some Internet browsers allow you to opt out of third party cookies. For more information about opting out of third party cookies, follow your Internet browse help file directions.
